Thinking through what I want to accomplish
Before this experience I did not know what would happen. I knew that I was going to try out for the Franklin County Junior Fair Board. I really wanted to get in, but I had to pass an interview first. I did end up passing the interview and I was on the Junior Fair Board. I also knew that we had elections for our club officers. I thought that I was going to get either President, Vice President, or Secretary, but I did not end up getting any of those. I got to be our club's Treasurer. Even though I was thinking that I would get a certain office, I was so glad that I got Treasurer because it makes it easier for me to respect what other officers do and I got to learn a whole new leadership position.
From an educational standpoint, there are so many different things that 4-H taught me. The first thing that 4-H taught me was that communication is very important in groups. If you do not communicate with your group, no one will know what needs to be done and who should do what. Another thing that I learned was that every group needs a leader. This leader will help guide the group and make sure that everyone is staying on track and doing what they are supposed to do. I also learned that you should put in 100% of effort into everything that you do. If you do not put effort into anything, you will never succeed. 4-H also taught me to present my findings to a crowd. This is very important because if I have to present my your research in front of my class, I will have to design a presentation. 4-H also taught me how to speak and answer questions correctly in front if the crowd. I know that I will have to know my project very well so that I can answer any questions that they may have.
I was hoping to gain knowledge on how to adapt to different crowds when I am presenting my projects. I know how to present to the people at the Franklin County Fair, but when I go to the Ohio State Fair, I have no idea how to adapt to that different environment. Each new place that I go to, they have different expectations and questions that they ask. I would love to know what they expect of me and how I can adapt to any environment while I am presenting my project. That is why I got a mentor, so that I can ask them these questions and so that they could help me adapt to the environment.
During this experience, I got to work with Kathy Kerr. Kathy is an adviser in my Ropes N' Reins club. I got to work with her for the model horse show. She showed me what I needed to do for each of the categories in the horse show. After the model horse show, I got to work with her on the Honors club. For the Honors club, we had to have meetings with each other so that we knew what was supposed to be accomplished and when it should be done. We had several meetings and came to the conclusion that we had all of the information we needed in the correct place. We also came to a conclusion that all of the information is supposed to be placed in a binder with pictures and then turned into the Franklin County Extension Office before September 8, 2018.
Before I had my experience in this year of 4-H, I thought that I would benefit from a lot of things. I knew that I was going to benefit from being on the Fair Board and the Teen Leaders Council because they would both teach me about leadership at a deeper level. They teach us by having us speak to other counties to see how they lead their clubs and we also speak to the local government to see how they lead and what skills would be helpful to have. I would also benefit from presenting my projects to different crowds so that I am ready for anything that comes my way.
