My mentor kathy kerr
This is Kathy's bio and how she got into 4-H. You can contact her at [email protected].
"I was a 4-H kid when I was younger. We didn’t have too many clubs that did both horses and domestic projects, so I was a member of two different clubs. Ropes & Reins, where I could take horse projects, and also a cooking/sewing club. I remember getting lots of help with sewing from advisers and adults in the club. And I also remember helping younger kids with their horse projects. As my sister and i went away to college, the horses got less and less attention from us, and became a burden to my parents. Dad sold the horses, and little by little the barn filled up with auction “treasures”.
When Molly was 8 years old… she begged me to take some riding lessons. I signed her up at a little barn in Hilliard. I made sure it was the kind of lesson where she was not only learning to ride, but was also responsible for cleaning stalls, saddling and grooming the horse, and feeding and watering. Horses are great fun to ride! But I also wanted her to know there was quite a bit of work involved with owning them. She wasn’t daunted, and at age 9 she begged Grandpa for a pony. We explained all the work that would be needed in fence repair, cleaning out the barn, and getting pastures ready for inhabitants. Again, she wasn’t daunted, and we spent 6 months of every weekend “working” at the farm to get it ready. Grandpa finally bought her a pony. Two pony’s actually, as horses are herd animals. and shouldn’t be alone.
That’s where my second portion of 4-H membership began. Ropes & Reins was still in existence, and being Advised by Leslie and Joe Federer. So we registered in the club. As Molly got more involved, Leslie asked me to be Assistant adviser. and then as her life made changes.. she asked me to take over the club. I remained Head adviser until Molly aged out. And now we have new Advisers, Colleen Bingamin, and Kirstyn Federer. Once again, I am Assistant Adviser. But still loving the ability to watch kids grow!!" -Kathy Kerr
I chose Kathy as my mentor because she has been my adviser since I have been in 4-H. I have been in 4-H for 5 years and I really wanted a mentor that knew what I was capable of doing. I also chose her because I wanted someone who has been through 4-H, so that she can teach me how to get better. She has been with 4-H for many years and she knows what we are supposed to do when we are presenting projects to the judge and she also knows what we should do to become great leaders in our club. This is why she is a great mentor.
Kathy is now the assistant adviser in my Ropes N' Reins club. She was in 4-H when she was little and her daughter was also in 4-H. For meetings, she helps with whatever she can. If we do have clover buds, she makes the activities that they work on every meeting. This year we did not have any clover buds, so she helped organize the booth that we put our fair stuff in. On top of being the assistant adviser, she is also very helpful. She is always there when someone needs help. She also makes it as easy as possible for new members to adjust to 4-H. I am so glad that I have her as my mentor.
Kathy helped influence me as a student be teaching me the proper ways to present my findings for my project. She helped me create a display that had bullet points showing what I learned. She also told me how I should dress properly when I am interviewing with my project. While she was going through all of this she helped me do a mock judging. She said that I should always greet the person and shake their hand. Then when she was going through the interview she gave me tips on how to not show my nerves. All of this information is very helpful because I will need to keep this in mind when I am presenting a project to any of my classes. It will also help me in the future with job interviews and presenting my work findings.
Kathy has taught me so much about 4-H. She taught me how to be a better leader. Even though I did not get to be president this year, I learned how important it is for all of the officers to work together. If we do not communicate, nothing will get done and everything will fall apart. She also taught me a lot about 4-H and how I should present my projects. One of the most important things I have to remember is that knowing my book is the key to answering most of the judges questions. This is what really helped me win the clock trophy this year. Kathy has been a huge help for not only my 4-H experience, she also helped me with school and life experiences as well.
